Yoshitoshi Tsukioka (1839 – 1892) was a painter who excelled at dynamic historical and story paintings and used a technique he learned from his mentor, Kuniyoshi Utagawa. He earnestly pursued his own expression without becoming confused during the turbulent times at the end of the Edo Period and the Meiji Restoration, but eventually suffered from mental illness as a result of excessive self-observation. This exhibition presents approximately 150 of his pieces selected from Masaki Nishii’s collection.
