Shigeru Mizuki (1922-2015) was a manga artist who created many yokai works, including his masterpiece “Gegege no Kitaro,” and established yokai culture among modern Japanese.
This exhibition, planned on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his birth, is the first of the many Shigeru Mizuki exhibitions that have been held to date to focus on the specific methods by which yokai paintings are created.
In addition to the first public display of yokai-related materials that Mizuki collected and referred to, such as Toriyama Sekien's “Gazu Hyakki Yagyo” and Yanagita Kunio's “Yokai Dangi,” the exhibition will also showcase more than 100 of Shigeru Mizuki's yokai paintings.
We hope that this exhibition will bring yokai closer to you and allow you to appreciate Mizuki's worldview, which continues to fascinate many people to this day.
